Construction work under way to improve pedestrian safety and traffic calming in Blaauwberg District
07 May 2026
The City of Cape Town has commenced with construction work to improve pedestrian walkways and the implementation of traffic calming measures at selected locations across the Blaauwberg District. This will enhance pedestrian safety and encourage active mobility in Brooklyn, Parklands, Table View, Melkbosstrand and Montague Gardens.
The work is planned to take place from tomorrow, 8 May 2026 until Wednesday 17 June 2026 between 07:30 and 17:00 from Monday to Friday, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays.
‘The key objective of this project is to improve pedestrian safety and to make improvements to road infrastructure that will actually encourage active mobility in Brooklyn, Parklands, Table View, Melkbosstrand and Montague Gardens. Our focus is on locations where vulnerable road users are most at risk. Residents in these areas may experience some noise while the work is under way and can expect some temporary traffic disruptions along the affected streets. We thank all residents and road users for their patience and cooperation over the next few weeks,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The project comprises the following:
Brooklyn
- Footways will be constructed along Koeberg Road; Vasco Street (between Kings Road and Da Gama Street); Dreyer Street and Kettley Way
- Parking embayments to be implemented along Poole Street, between Curlew Street and Festival Road
Parklands
- Footways will be constructed along the corner of Dorchester Drive and Wood Drive
Table View
- A raised intersection and footway will be constructed along Janssens Avenue
- A speedhump will be constructed along Pentz Drive
- Residents are advised that temporary road closures or disruptions may occur, particularly at Pentz Drive and Janssens Avenue in Table View.
Melkbosstrand
- A raised intersection will be constructed along 11th Avenue and Mostert Road
- A footway will be constructed along Harold Ashwell Boulevard
- Some temporary road closures or disruptions may occur, particularly at 11th Avenue and Mostert Road in Melkbosstrand.
Montague Gardens
- Footways will be constructed along Link Road between Montague Drive and Railway Road
Any temporary closures to be implemented during the course of this project will not exceed one day per location. Traffic will be managed and road users are advised to follow signage and reduced speed limits.
